Are Sliding Windows Energy Efficient? Here’s What Matters Most

When homeowners ask if sliding windows are energy efficient, the answer isn’t just about the frame, it’s about the glass.

At Love That Door® , we hear this question often:
Are aluminum sliding windows energy efficient?
Let’s break it down with expert insight from Chad Crenshaw.

Why the Glass Matters More Than the Frame

Many people believe that vinyl windows are the most energy-efficient option. While it’s true that vinyl frames offer good insulation, they make up only about 5% of the total window. The remaining 95% is the glass and that’s where true energy performance is decided.

What Makes Glass Energy Efficient?

When evaluating the efficiency of sliding windows, you’ll want to look at several key components of the glass package:

1. Double or Triple Pane Construction

At a minimum, energy-efficient windows should be double-paned. For superior insulation, triple-pane glass offers additional thermal and sound control. Multiple panes create layers that resist heat transfer and increase overall comfort.

2. Low-E 22 Coating

Low-E (low emissivity) coatings help block heat and harmful UV rays.
Low-E 22 refers to a double layer of this coating, applied on the inner surfaces of the glass to reflect heat outward in summer and retain warmth in winter.

3. Gas Fill: Argon or Krypton

Between the panes, we inject argon or krypton gas. These inert gases are denser than air and significantly reduce heat transfer through the window. This is what creates a true thermal barrier.

4. Air Space Thickness

NASA has shown that captivated air is one of the best insulators available.
While most manufacturers offer a 0.5 to 0.75 inch air gap, Love That Door® starts at 1.25 inches and goes up to 2 inches in our triple-pane options. The greater the spacing, the better the insulation.

How Love That Door® Delivers Next-Level Window Performance

At Love That Door® , our aluminum sliding windows are engineered for energy performance from the glass out. We prioritize:

  • Oversized, high-performance IGUs (Insulated Glass Units)
  • Advanced Low-E coatings
  • Argon or Krypton gas fills
  • Thicker airspace for maximum efficiency

Whether you’re building new or upgrading, our custom window systems help you stay cooler in Texas summers and warmer in the winter, while lowering your energy bills year-round.
