Automated Patio Doors:
Smart Home Integration Guide
Love That Door®
Manual patio doors work fine — until you’re carrying a tray of food to the patio.
Until it’s raining and you need to close a 12-foot opening quickly.
Until you want to let the dog out without getting off the couch.
Automated patio doors solve these problems with electric lift-and-slide systems that do the heavy lifting — literally.
The door lifts off its seal, slides open or closed, and locks itself. You press a button, tap your phone, or scan your fingerprint.
Here’s how the technology works, what to look for, and what it actually costs to automate a premium patio door.
This guide covers everything you need to know before investing in aluminum patio doors in the Dallas-Fort Worth area — the three main systems, how they differ, what to look for in construction quality, and what separates a premium door from an expensive mistake.
How Electric
Lift-and-Slide Works
Love That Door®
A standard lift-and-slide door uses a manual handle to lift the panel off its seal, then you slide it by hand.
An automated system replaces both steps with electric drives.
The lift drive raises the door panel approximately one inch off its seal. This happens in about 5 seconds.
Once lifted, the panel is no longer compressed against the gaskets — it’s floating on its rollers.
The slide drive uses a toothed belt connected to the panel to slide it along the track at approximately 75mm per second (about 3 inches per second). Smooth, quiet, consistent.
The reverse sequence closes: the slide drive pulls the panel back into position, and the lift mechanism lowers it onto its seals.
The multi-point locking system engages. The door is sealed, insulated, and locked — automatically.
The entire open-close cycle takes about 15-20 seconds depending on the opening width.
No effort. No resistance. No noise.
What It Can Handle
Love That Door®
The German-engineered electric drive system used by Love That Door® is not a residential afterthought bolted onto a standard door.
It’s a commercial-grade automation system adapted for premium residential use.
Performance specs:
- Maximum panel weight: 440 kg (970 lbs)
- Slide speed: ~75 mm/s
- Lift time: ~5 seconds
- Maximum frame width: 6,500 mm (21+ feet)
- Maximum sash height: 3,300 mm (10.8 feet)
- Operating voltage: 24V DC (safe, low voltage)
- Operating temperature: -5°C to +60°C (23°F to 140°F)
- Certification: TÜV NORD tested
That 970-pound capacity means automation isn’t limited to small, light panels.
Your largest, heaviest patio door — the one that’s a workout to open manually — is exactly the one that benefits most from electric drive.

Control Options
Love That Door®
The system offers multiple ways to operate your door. They can all be active simultaneously.
Control keypad — mounted on the wall next to the door. Simple open/close/stop buttons with a display showing status and any fault codes.
Smartphone app — via a WLAN box connected to the drive system. Open and close from anywhere on your home network. Check status. Receive alerts.
Fingerprint reader — mounted on the exterior for keyless entry. Walk up, scan, door opens. No keys, no codes, no fumbling.
Key switch — exterior-mounted for a more traditional approach. Turn the key, door operates.
Home automation integration — the system connects to your existing smart home platform via a relay/actuator module.
Build it into routines: “Good morning” opens the patio. “Goodnight” closes and locks everything. “Welcome home” unlocks as your car pulls in.
Push-button panel — simple wall-mounted buttons for family members who don’t want to use an app.
Safety: The Non-Negotiable
A 970-pound door moving on its own needs safety engineering, not just convenience engineering.
Anti-trap protection is built into the drive system.
If the door encounters resistance during closing — a hand, a pet, a piece of furniture — it stops immediately and reverses.
This is TÜV NORD certified, meaning it’s been independently tested and verified by one of the most rigorous testing organizations in the world.
For panels up to 330 kg (727 lbs): Built-in anti-trap protection is sufficient for all operating modes.
For panels 330-440 kg (727-970 lbs): Additional safety devices are recommended:
- Light curtain — an invisible optical barrier that triggers a stop if anything breaks the beam
- Motion detector / presence sensor — detects people or objects in the door’s path before closing begins
Anti-crush absorbers in the stay system provide additional physical protection — the absorber reduces the force if something contacts the panel during operation.
Emergency manual release — if power fails, a manual release allows full operation by hand.
You lift, you slide, you close — exactly like a non-automated door.
Power failure never means you can’t use your door.
Retrofit: Adding Automation Later
Already have a lift-and-slide door?
The electric drive system can be retrofitted to existing door systems without replacing the door itself.
This means you can install a manual lift-and-slide patio door now and add automation later — as a planned upgrade, after a renovation, or when your budget allows.
The retrofit installs a surface-mounted drive system above the door that connects to the existing panel via a drive pin and toothed belt.
A concealed version is also available for timber and timber-aluminum combinations, where the entire drive system is hidden within the frame.
Installation and Power
Power supply: The system runs on 24V DC — safe, low-voltage, energy-efficient.
A transformer (110-230V AC input to 24V DC output) can be surface-mounted near the door, installed on a DIN rail in your electrical panel, or concealed within the framing.
Wiring: A 24V DC supply cable runs from the transformer to the drive unit. Control keypads connect via a 10m supply cable. Additional control elements wire into the system as needed.
No structural modification is typically required beyond the standard door installation.
The drive mounts to the frame or wall above the door opening.

What Automation Costs
Love That Door®
Automation is a premium feature, but it’s not as expensive as most people assume — especially relative to the cost of the door itself.
The electric drive system is priced as an add-on to the door package. The cost depends on:
- Panel weight and size (heavier/larger panels require more powerful drives)
- Number of automated panels (single or double-sliding configurations)
- Control options selected (basic keypad vs. full smart home integration)
- Additional safety devices (light curtains, motion detectors)
- Surface-mounted vs. concealed installation
The hardware is German-engineered and backed by the same warranty as the door system.

Frequently Asked
Questions
01.
How do automated patio doors work?
Automated patio doors use an electric lift-and-slide system. An electric drive lifts the panel off its seal (about 5 seconds), then a toothed belt slides the panel along the track at approximately 3 inches per second. The reverse sequence closes and locks the door automatically. The entire cycle takes 15-20 seconds.
02.
How heavy of a patio door can be automated?
Love That Door’s German-engineered electric drive system handles panels up to 440 kg (970 lbs), with a maximum frame width of 21+ feet and sash height of 10.8 feet. This is commercial-grade automation adapted for premium residential use.
03.
Are automated patio doors safe for children and pets?
Yes. Love That Door’s automated systems carry TÜV NORD certification for anti-trap protection. If the door encounters any resistance during closing — a hand, a pet, a piece of furniture — it stops immediately and reverses. Panels over 727 lbs can add light curtains or motion detectors for additional safety.
04.
Can I add automation to my existing patio door later?
Yes. The electric drive system can be retrofitted to existing lift-and-slide door systems without replacing the door. A surface-mounted drive installs above the door and connects to the existing panel. A concealed version is also available for timber combinations.
05.
What happens to automated patio doors during a power outage?
An emergency manual release allows full operation by hand during power failure. You lift the handle, slide the panel, and close it exactly like a non-automated door. Power failure never means you can’t use your door.
06.
Where can I see automated patio doors in Dallas?
Love That Door has patio door systems on display at four DFW showrooms: Dallas (1322 Round Table Dr), Frisco (2429 Preston Rd Ste 400), Fort Worth (9100 N Fwy Suite 100), and Grapevine (129 S Main St Ste 150). Ask for a live demonstration of the electric drive system.
