Why Captivated Air Matters — What NASA Taught Us About Door Glass

“NASA proved that captivated air is the best insulator you can have.” I say that in every showroom, and it usually stops people mid-step. NASA? Insulation? What does space exploration have to do with a patio door in Dallas, Texas? Everything, it turns out. The principle that keeps astronauts comfortable in space is the same principle that keeps Texas heat out of your living room — and the distance between two pieces of glass is the most important measurement on your entire aluminum patio door.

Texas Code and the 0.30 Number

In the state of Texas, the energy code says an aluminum door must have a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient of 0.30 or less. SHGC measures how much solar radiation — heat from the sun — passes through the glass and the frame into your home. A single pane of clear glass has an SHGC of about 0.80. In August in Dallas, with a west-facing patio door getting blasted for six hours straight, that 0.80 number translates directly to your AC bill.

To get from 0.80 down to 0.30 or below in an aluminum frame, you need three things: Low-E² coating — two films on both pieces of glass, four films total. Argon gas fill — denser than air, reducing convection between panes. And captivated air — the distance between the panes that makes the biggest difference.

Captivated Air — What NASA Actually Proved

“Captivated air” is air that cannot move — trapped between two sealed panes of glass, completely still. Moving air transfers heat by convection. Still air does not. NASA proved this principle decades ago: a layer of still air provides more thermal resistance per inch than most solid materials. LTD’s glass package starts at 1 inch overall between the panes. A heat lamp glows at 100 degrees behind a panel of LTD glass — 1 inch overall, Low-E² on both panes, argon-filled, captivated air. On the other side, room temperature. The same lamp behind a standard half-inch builder-grade glass panel radiates heat you can feel from a foot away. The difference is not the Low-E. It’s the inch of captivated air.

Why Every LTD Door and Window Uses the Same Glass Package

If the glass package is what makes an aluminum door code-compliant in Texas, why would you use a different glass package on your windows? You wouldn’t — and we don’t. Three Questions to Ask About Any Door's Glass Package

1. “What is the overall glass thickness?” Less than 1 inch means less captivated air and lower thermal performance. Period.

2. “Does the glass package include Low-E² or standard Low-E?” Standard Low-E is one film on one pane. Low-E² is two films on each pane — four total. The SHGC difference can be the difference between passing Texas code and failing it.

3. “Is the cavity filled with argon, and what is the seal warranty on the glass unit?” If they can’t tell you the seal warranty, they don’t trust their own manufacturing. LTD’s glass carries a 5-year warranty against seal failure.
